Seaside Day...have a seaside day in your own school!

Seaside

About the workshop

Having your own seaside day in school is a great alternative to arranging a school trip to the seaside

Our Key Stage 1 Seaside Day is the perfect way for your children to learn interesting facts and information about the seaside.

.

The workshop is age appropriate with lots of fun and joining in. As well as listening and learning there are practical activities too.

Because we are very experienced at working with younger children you can be sure that everyone will be fully engaged from start to finish.

The children will learn about:

  • The seaside then and now.
  • The history of the seaside and why people went there.
  • The industrial revolution.
  • Victorian and Edwardian seaside holidays.
  • Bathing machines
  • Seaside entertainment
  • Punch and Judy

The highlight of the day is watching a traditional Punch and Judy Show. In past times no trip to the seaside would be complete without an ice cream, a donkey ride and seeing at least one performance of Punch and Judy.

Children watching the Punch and Judy Show

These children are watching the Punch and Judy Show. It was a lovely sunny day and so we were able to set up outside.

Victorian seaside cartoon

Seaside holidays became increasingly popular in Victorian times. This cartoon shows a family disembarking from a steam ship.

Punch and Judy Puppet Theatre

It is surprising how many children have not seen a Punch and Judy Show. Our puppet theatre is very impressive and watching the show is a very exciting and memorable experience.

3D Donkey

Our seaside day includes a number of practical activities including making a 3D donkey.

Vintage Punch and Judy puppets

Another highlight of the day is the chance to examine our collection of vintage Punch and Judy puppets many of which are extremely valuable.

Children cutting out

Children busy making a miniature Punch and Judy Show from card. We usually do this step by step sometimes with as many as ninety children in the school hall all following on.

Steam train

Steam trains are covered when we are learning about the history of the seaside. It is hard for children to imagine a time when there were no or very few motor cars.

Fishing boat

Ron's grand father was a fisherman and owned a boat like this one. This photo was taken at the seaside where Ron grew up.

We have all enjoyed a good day with Ron and it was a great introduction to our topic on the seaside. The children loved the Punch and Judy show and joined in with great enthusiasm and lots of noise! They were interested in seeing inside the puppet theatre and finding out more about "behind the scenes." Being able to touch and use the puppets in the afternoon was great and they look forward to finishing off and decorating their own puppet theatres tomorrow- and of course putting on a show of Read More

The children have been excited for the whole school day. They were 100% involved in the Punch and Judy performance and totally engrossed. Ron kept the momentum going from the start of the day to the end. I would highly recommend the workshop.

We would highly recommend Ron's punch and Judy show. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot about the history of punch and Judy shows too. We also took part in a puppet making workshop in the afternoon, which was planned perfectly, well paced and very well organised. The children and teachers were all delighted with the finished puppets and we received many positive comments from parents too!

What a fantastic day! Ron was very entertaining and knowledgabe. The children thoroughly enjoyed the whole day, especially the Punch and Judy show. They learned many facts and information as well as handling the puppets and creating their own mini punch and Judy shows. The feedback from parents was positive as many of the children were writing scripts and creating their own puppet shows at home! Will be recommending this service to others in the future! Thanks.
