Seaside Day...have a seaside day in your own school!

Seaside

About the workshop

Having your own seaside day in school is a great alternative to arranging a school trip to the seaside

Our Key Stage 1 Seaside Day is the perfect way for your children to learn interesting facts and information about the seaside.

.

The workshop is age appropriate with lots of fun and joining in. As well as listening and learning there are practical activities too.

Because we are very experienced at working with younger children you can be sure that everyone will be fully engaged from start to finish.

The children will learn about:

  • The seaside then and now.
  • The history of the seaside and why people went there.
  • The industrial revolution.
  • Victorian and Edwardian seaside holidays.
  • Bathing machines
  • Seaside entertainment
  • Punch and Judy

The highlight of the day is watching a traditional Punch and Judy Show. In past times no trip to the seaside would be complete without an ice cream, a donkey ride and seeing at least one performance of Punch and Judy.

Children watching the Punch and Judy Show

These children are watching the Punch and Judy Show. It was a lovely sunny day and so we were able to set up outside.

Victorian seaside cartoon

Seaside holidays became increasingly popular in Victorian times. This cartoon shows a family disembarking from a steam ship.

Punch and Judy Puppet Theatre

It is surprising how many children have not seen a Punch and Judy Show. Our puppet theatre is very impressive and watching the show is a very exciting and memorable experience.

3D Donkey

Our seaside day includes a number of practical activities including making a 3D donkey.

Vintage Punch and Judy puppets

Another highlight of the day is the chance to examine our collection of vintage Punch and Judy puppets many of which are extremely valuable.

Children cutting out

Children busy making a miniature Punch and Judy Show from card. We usually do this step by step sometimes with as many as ninety children in the school hall all following on.

Steam train

Steam trains are covered when we are learning about the history of the seaside. It is hard for children to imagine a time when there were no or very few motor cars.

Fishing boat

Ron's grand father was a fisherman and owned a boat like this one. This photo was taken at the seaside where Ron grew up.

Thank you for a brilliant day. Our Year 2 children absolutely loved their seaside day. All the information was perfectly pitched for the age group and the children were hooked from the moment that Ron started talking. The highlight of the day was the Punch and Judy show. Some of the children even went home and recreated the show for their parents.

What an amazing seaside day we had for our first day back after the May half term in Y1. Usually for our seaside topic we would go on a trip to the beach but because of COVID we needed an alternative. I am so glad we booked the seaside day with Ron. He was absolutely incredible with the children and every single child left with a smile on their face. We found out about seasides in the past, made seashell pictures, 3D donkeys and was shown how to make our own puppet theatre. The highlight of Read More

We invited Ron in as part of our seaside topic and we had a brilliant day! Ron was amazing with the children. He taught us lots about the history of the seaside in an enthusiastic and humorous way; even the staff learnt a lot! The children thoroughly enjoyed the Punch and Judy show and the afternoon activities. Ron was very approachable and friendly, he brought in some lovely resources and the day was well structured to cater for 90 Year 2 children. We would definitely recommend inviting Ron Read More

A super start to our seaside topic. Our children thoroughly enjoyed the day spent with Ron. The best part of the day was the Punch and Judy show which allowed for lots of audience participation, especially from the nursery and reception children. Thank you, Ron, for a lovely day.
