A wonderful opportunity to discover an amazing group of plants, many of which are
under threat from climate change and loss of habitat. These are the " carnivorous
" plants of which there are some 350 species worldwide. Children are fascinated by
these plants. Perhaps because they look so weird or perhaps because they eat things
they find them utterly cool. Often children will " react " to these plants by treating
them as a pet, even giving them names. All this grossness and strangeness make carnivorous
plants an ideal attention-
Our workshop begins with an illustrated talk about the evolution of the plants, their habitats and how they catch insects. The presentation raises the subject of habitat destruction and conservation issues. The talk could be given to the whole school or several classes together. Following the talk, individual workshop sessions begin and the teacher can choose from a range of subjects depending on the age of the children and which particular activities will link in with other work the children are doing. We offer a selection of activities covering lab experiments, independent research, demonstrations, debate, drawing, writing and model making. There are worksheets for the children, hand outs and teacher notes. Other topics which can be brought into the workshop include evolution, geography, climate, astronomy, computers, economics, politics, photography, carpentry, medicine, and entomology. In summary this workshop has much potential as a vehicle to promote interest and learning in many areas and can be utilised by teachers to stimulate the imagination and curiosity of their pupils.
