This workshop is all about having fun with numbers. It is ideal for year six pupils but all key stage two children can participate as the content can be varied according to the age group and ability of the participants. The workshop is designed to be both entertaining and enjoyable. The children will be required to use their listening and observation skills, they will need to concentrate and to think carefully about the task in hand. Some of the children will be able to take part in various presentations and everyone will be involved in problem solving and practical work either individually, in pairs or in teams. The workshop involves utilising basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction and mental maths. The pupils will watch a series of entertaining demonstrations, each leading up to a magical effect. This could be mind reading, an amazing prediction or a surprise ending. The method will then be explained and the children have a go themselves. As the workshop progresses the children are asked to imagine other effects which could be created using the various mathematical processes. There is plenty of scope for teachers to do follow up work in class when the workshop is over. Notes are available on request.
